Seasonal "NJ Shore" Prep: Training Tips for Boardwalk Etiquette and Salt-Water Safety

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and summer is almost here! If you are a pet parent living in North Arlington or the surrounding Bergen County area, you are likely looking forward to day trips or weekend getaways down to the Jersey Shore.

Bringing your dog along to the coast can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it requires some specific preparation to ensure everyone stays safe and well-behaved.

At K9 Nanni, we want to ensure your dog is ready for the coast before you pack the car. Here is our guide to boardwalk etiquette and salt-water safety for the 2026 summer season.

Boardwalk Etiquette: Training for the Crowds

Boardwalks are highly stimulating, full of distractions, and often packed with people, cyclists, and other pets. To prevent stress or reactive behavior, practice these training steps in advance:

Master the "Heel" and "Focus" Commands: In high-density areas like the boardwalk, a loose-leash walk is essential. Practice keeping your dog’s attention on you instead of the surrounding crowds.
Ignore Tempting Distractions: From discarded food to passing strollers, your dog will be tempted to pull. Use short, positive reinforcement training sessions in busy, outdoor settings (like Riverside County Park) to build impulse control.
Maintain Personal Space: Teach your dog to walk calmly beside you rather than weaving in front of pedestrians or other dogs.

Need a refresher? Our K9 Nanni Academy or private in-home training sessions can help build these real-world manners so your dog can handle bustling environments with confidence.

Salt-Water and Beach Safety

While it’s great to let your pup run in the ocean, too much salt water and summer heat can be dangerous. Keep these rules in mind:

Prevent Salt Water Ingestion: Drinking sea salt water can make your dog very sick. Bring plenty of fresh, clean drinking water and a portable bowl to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
Rinse Off After Swimming: Salt and sand can cause severe skin and paw irritation. Always rinse your dog with fresh water after a swim, and dry their ears to prevent infections.
Protect the Paws: Asphalt, boardwalk planks, and sand can get incredibly hot during the summer months. Test the surface with the back of your hand before walking your dog, and consider protective paw wax or booties if necessary.

Get Your Dog Ready for the Coast This Month!

Summer travel requires prep, and your dog’s behavior is no exception. Start early so your dog is ready to behave both on and off the beach.
